Boulder's hotel stock is compact, and when Sundance comes to town it will fill fast. If you're priced out — or simply prefer a quieter pillow — three nearby communities offer a genuine base-camp alternative, each with its own commute profile and vibe. Here's how to think through the tradeoff.

Louisville & Superior — Closest Overflow (~15 Minutes)

Louisville and its neighbor Superior sit just east of Boulder along US-36, making them the shortest hop of the three options. Driving time to downtown Boulder runs about 15 minutes in normal traffic, though festival week congestion on US-36 and the Diagonal Highway can add meaningful time — budget a cushion.

Who it suits: Couples or solo travelers who want a recognizable chain hotel at a typically lower rate but still want a quick getaway back to the room between screenings. Car-dependent travelers will feel most at home here.

Transit note: RTD's Flatiron Flyer BRT stops at McCaslin Station in Louisville/Superior, connecting toward both Boulder and Denver. Depending on where your screenings land relative to Boulder's transit mall, this can be a practical car-free option — check RTD's trip planner for the most current schedules.

Longmont — Budget-Friendly with a Downtown of Its Own (~25 Minutes)

Longmont sits roughly 25 minutes north of Boulder via US-36 or the Diagonal Highway (CO-119). It carries a noticeably different energy — a walkable historic downtown, local breweries, and hotel rates that tend to run lower than Boulder's. The drive is straightforward outside of peak hours, but add extra time during festival rush.

Who it suits: Budget-focused attendees who don't mind a slightly longer commute and want a full evening's dining options back at their base. Groups with a car will do best here; Longmont's RTD connections to Boulder are more limited and can involve transfers.

Denver — Urban Amenities, Longest Commute (~45 Minutes by Express Bus)

Denver is the big-city option: far more hotel inventory, a huge range of price points, and excellent late-night food. The tradeoff is distance — plan on about 45 minutes on the Flatiron Flyer to Boulder's 14th Street transit hub under normal conditions, longer if you're driving and traffic thickens.

Who it suits: Attendees layering Sundance onto a broader Colorado trip, or anyone who truly needs a wide hotel selection. The Flatiron Flyer BRT runs express between Denver Union Station and Boulder, making this a car-optional commute — one of the few genuine transit lifelines into Boulder from the east.
