Where to Stay & Eat in the Towns Near Boulder

Boulder's rooms are limited and go fast in January. The good news: several nearby towns are an easy drive away, often cheaper, and genuinely worth a visit on their own. Here's the overflow guide official coverage won't give you. (Drive times are off-peak estimates — add margin for January weather and festival traffic.)
Longmont — ~27 min / 16 mi
The strongest bet if you want real live theater at night plus a walkable Main Street of restaurants and breweries.
- Eat: Flavor of India (Main St, rooftop patio), Jefes Tacos & Tequila, Landline Doughnuts, Colorado Dumplings.
- Stay: downtown inns plus chain hotels along the US-287 corridor — book early (visitlongmont.org).
- See: the Dickens Opera House (an 1881 landmark), the 900+-seat Vance Brand Civic Auditorium, and Jesters Dinner Theatre.
Louisville — ~18 min / 10 mi
The closest genuinely charming option — a historic Main Street repeatedly ranked among the best places to live.
- Eat: The Empire Lounge & Restaurant, 740 Front (steakhouse in a 1904 landmark), Lucky Pie Pizza & Tap House, The Melting Pot.
- Stay: Residence Inn Boulder/Louisville, Hampton Inn, and Courtyard by Marriott (all off the Boulder–Denver Turnpike).
- See: the Louisville Center for the Arts (an 1894 schoolhouse) and its Coal Creek Theater company.
Lyons — ~25 min / 17 mi
A scenic mountain-gateway village with a real music pedigree and a surprisingly strong food scene.
- Eat: Marigold (seasonal fine dining), Oskar Blues Grill & Brew (the brewery's original taproom), Spirit Hound Distillers, St. Vrain Market.
- Stay: A-Lodge Lyons, WeeCasa Tiny Home Resort, Sunshine Mountain Lodge.
- See: Planet Bluegrass, the riverside ranch behind RockyGrass and the Folks Festival (concerts are summer, but it defines the town).
Superior & Broomfield — ~15–25 min / 10–15 mi
The practical corridor play: the biggest cluster of reliable hotels along US-36, closest to Boulder without Boulder rates.
- Eat: Wayne's Smoke Shack (Texas BBQ) and Sushi Yoshi in Downtown Superior; The Post Chicken & Beer nearby (verify hours).
- Stay: Element Boulder Superior (all-suite, at Downtown Superior), Renaissance Boulder Flatiron (Broomfield), Hilton Garden Inn Broomfield/Boulder.
- See: FlatIron Crossing — a big shopping/dining/entertainment hub rather than a theater.
Nederland — ~35–45 min (canyon drive)
A funky little alpine town near Eldora for mountain character over convenience — best on days without an early screening. It's also the scenic gateway to the casino towns via the Peak to Peak Highway (see below).
- Eat: Kathmandu Restaurant (Nepali/Indian), Salto Coffee Works, Backcountry Pizza & Tap House.
- Stay: The Boulder Creek Lodge, in town near the Carousel of Happiness.
- See: the Carousel of Happiness, a restored carousel with 56+ hand-carved animals.
Black Hawk & Central City — ~45 min (casinos + Nederland combo)
Two historic mining towns turned Colorado's biggest casino district — a quick, scenic escape, and easy to combo with a Nederland or Eldora day along the Peak to Peak Highway, Colorado's oldest scenic byway.
- Play: Black Hawk has the largest cluster of casinos (Ameristar, Monarch Casino Resort Spa, and more); Central City is the smaller, more historic neighbor. Gaming is 21+.
- See: the Central City Opera — one of the oldest opera companies in the U.S. — performs each summer in a restored 1878 opera house.
- Getting there: roughly 45 minutes from Boulder via Coal Creek Canyon, or link it with Nederland/Eldora on the Peak to Peak Highway (CO-119) for a full mountain loop.
Estes Park — ~1 hr / 32 mi (a splurge, not a daily base)
The destination pick: the Rocky Mountain National Park gateway and the iconic Stanley Hotel — worth a night or two, but too far to commute daily.
- Eat: Cascades steakhouse and the Whiskey Bar at the Stanley; downtown Estes has more (check winter hours).
- Stay: The Stanley Hotel (the 1909 landmark that inspired *The Shining* — see our lore piece).
- See: the Stanley's music, events, and ghost tours; Rocky Mountain National Park.
