Free Things to Do During Sundance in Boulder
Published October 2026
Sundance doesn't have to mean spending big. The first Boulder edition runs Jan 21-31, 2027, with venues across downtown Boulder and the CU Boulder campus. Even if you never buy a ticket, there's plenty to enjoy. Here's how to fill your days for little or nothing.
What festivals typically offer for free
Film festivals often include some no-cost programming alongside ticketed screenings. Common examples:
- Public panels or conversations about filmmaking
- Outdoor gathering spaces and street-level atmosphere
- Occasional community screenings or partner events
The film lineup (expected in December) and the screening schedule haven't been announced yet, and we don't know which 2027 events will be free. The official Sundance site is the source of truth. We're an independent, unofficial guide.
Free ways to ride
Free RTD routes have been announced for the festival. Check RTD and sundance.org for which routes are included and when they run before you count on a specific line. Leaving the car behind also makes it easier to roam between downtown and campus.
Free things in Boulder itself
Pearl Street people-watching. The Pearl Street pedestrian mall is a pleasant place to wander in any season. Expect street performers, window shopping, and a good chance of spotting festival-goers. Bundle up, because January in Boulder can be cold.
Chautauqua trails. The meadow and nearby trails at Chautauqua offer big Flatirons views. Winter conditions vary, so expect possible snow or ice and wear sturdy shoes.
Free museums and galleries. The CU Art Museum on campus has typically offered free admission, and Boulder has a number of galleries that are free to browse. Hours change seasonally, so confirm before you go.
Boulder Public Library. The library is a warm, free place to rest between outings, and it has hosted film-related programming in the past. Check its events calendar for anything scheduled during the festival.
Festival HQ atmosphere. The festival's headquarters is at The Rink, 1722 14th St. Whether any part of it will be open to the public hasn't been confirmed, so watch the official site for details.
Quick tips
- Dress in layers, with warm socks and a windproof jacket.
- Pick a free activity near each screening or event you do attend, so you can use gaps in your day.
- Check official channels a few days ahead for added free events or changes.
For reference, ticket packages go on public sale Oct 15, 2026, single tickets on Jan 8, 2027, and an online festival runs Jan 28-31. If you want a screening later on, those dates are worth marking.
