Boulder's Film Scene Beyond Sundance

Sundance is coming to a town that already loves movies. Boulder's home-grown film culture is part of why it was a natural fit.

Boulder International Film Festival (BIFF)

Boulder has hosted its own film festival for two decades: the Boulder International Film Festival, launched in 2005 and held each spring (typically March). It draws roughly 25,000 attendances and is a separate, locally founded event — not affiliated with Sundance. BIFF.

CU's International Film Series

On campus, the International Film Series (IFS) has screened art-house and world cinema since the 1940s — 100+ films a year in Muenzinger Auditorium, and notably one of the few programs still projecting 35mm reel-to-reel archival prints. IFS.

The Boedecker at the Dairy

The Boedecker Theater ("the Boe") inside the Dairy Arts Center screens independent and art films most nights, often with talkbacks — and the Dairy's theaters are on the 2027 Sundance venue list.

The takeaway: Sundance isn't parachuting into a blank slate — it's joining a film town that already has festivals, an archive-quality campus series, and a working art-house cinema.
