When Will the 2027 Lineup Be Announced?

Historically, the Sundance Film Festival reveals its official program in early December, roughly six to eight weeks before opening night. A press conference — streamed publicly and accompanied by a wave of trade coverage — typically kicks things off, followed by ticket sales opening for the general public within a few days. If the Boulder edition follows that pattern, expect the big announcement sometime in December 2026, though the specific date has not been confirmed.

How the Sundance Program Is Structured

Whether you're a first-timer or a festival veteran, it helps to know the sections before the titles drop. Sundance organizes its program into several distinct categories:

U.S. Dramatic Competition — American narrative features competing for the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award.
U.S. Documentary Competition — American nonfiction features, often the source of the festival's biggest conversation-starters.
World Cinema Dramatic Competition — International narrative films from outside the U.S.
World Cinema Documentary Competition — International nonfiction features.
NEXT — A section spotlighting ultra-low-budget, formally adventurous American films.
Premieres — High-profile narrative features, often with recognizable talent, screening outside of competition.
Midnight — Genre films: horror, thriller, and the gloriously strange, typically screening late at night.
Shorts — Curated programs of short films across narrative, documentary, animation, and experimental work.
New Frontier — Immersive, interactive, and boundary-pushing work at the intersection of film and emerging technology.

Each competition section typically features about ten to twelve films, though early reporting suggests Boulder's inaugural edition may expand some categories slightly to reflect the festival's new scale and venue footprint. The total number of films across all sections — features, shorts, and New Frontier projects — has historically reached well over 100 titles in a given year.
