Where to Hike Near Boulder in Winter (Sundance Guide)
Published June 2026 · Updated July 2026
Boulder's trailheads start right at the edge of town, so you can squeeze in a hike between screenings. In January expect snow, ice, and mud — see the safety note at the bottom.
Chautauqua & the Flatirons
Chautauqua Park is the iconic starting point under the Flatirons. The Chautauqua Trail and Bluebell–Baird are moderate; Royal Arch is a steeper, rewarding climb. Parking fills fast — go early or take the bus.
Mount Sanitas
Mount Sanitas is a punchy local classic close to downtown — a steep loop with big views. The adjacent Sanitas Valley Trail is a gentler, wider option that's better when it's icy.
Easy & flat options
- Boulder Creek Path — a paved, mostly-flat path through town; great when trails are icy.
- Mesa Trail (NCAR) — start from the NCAR mesa for rolling, scenic terrain.
- Betasso Preserve — a short drive up Boulder Canyon for quieter forest trails.
Winter safety: trails can be snowpacked and icy — bring traction devices (microspikes), layers, water, and sun protection. Days are short; start early. Check current conditions and maps via Boulder OSMP or a trail app before you go.
